The World’s Largest Medical Service System

Recent reports from Chinese authorities reveal that China has established the world’s largest disease prevention, control, and medical service system. Designed for rapid response, effective infectious disease surveillance, and early warning, this system played a pivotal role in numerous healthcare achievements during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025).

It is encouraging to note that China has maintained a steady momentum of national health campaigns, strengthened primary healthcare, and constructed a four-level prevention and control network spanning the central, provincial, municipal, and county (or district) levels.

Key Progress and Statistics

The impact of these initiatives is evident in the following data:

  • Health Literacy: The health literacy rate among residents rose from 2.23% in 2020 to 9.31% in 2024.
  • Disease Prevention: The government now provides immunisation services covering 15 diseases.
  • Chronic & Infectious Diseases: Premature deaths from major chronic diseases have steadily declined. Meanwhile, the incidence of infectious diseases like TB, Hepatitis B, and HIV/AIDS has either dropped significantly or remained at low levels.
  • Accessibility: By the end of 2024, the total number of medical institutions nationwide reached 1.09 million. Over 90% of residents can now reach a medical service point within 15 minutes.
  • Healthcare Workforce: The number of healthcare workers grew to 15.78 million by the end of last year.

Impact on Life Expectancy

The success of these efforts is most visible in the rising life expectancy of the population:

  • National Average: Life expectancy in China reached 79 years in 2024.
  • Provincial Success: In eight provinces, the average life expectancy has surpassed 80 years.

Global Cooperation and the "Digital Silk Road"

China remains committed to international collaboration in the health sector. For over six decades, it has provided medical aid to other developing nations, sending medical teams to 77 countries and regions.

In a broader context, China’s health promotion policy system is now firmly established. Factors posing risks to health are effectively controlled, and the "full life-cycle" healthcare capacity has significantly improved. Public participation in health and wellness activities continues to climb.

National Health Database and Awareness

To further its success in public health, China has established a national database of experts and resources to promote:

  1. Health awareness

  2. Balanced nutrition

  3. Fitness programs

  4. Psychological well-being

Because of these targeted interventions, premature mortality rates for cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, cancer, and diabetes are now well below the global average.

A Growing Culture of Fitness

A positive trend has emerged in Chinese society where more people are engaging in health activities both online and offline. This creates a strong social foundation for disease prevention. To support this, the government has constructed more exercise facilities and sports fields. The Chinese government continues to encourage citizens to participate in physical activities to contribute to the ongoing goal of building a "Healthy China."
