Some memories never fade — like watching mother grind turmeric on a traditional stone slab, her fingers stained yellow with spice. We used to ask what those yellow sticks were and what they would become. Their fragrance, and mother’s patient explanations, are unforgettable. Later, when the kitchen came under our control, we replaced the grinding stone with chopper blenders — but the memories of turmeric remained.
Today, turmeric is often processed with added chemicals and grown through accelerated production methods. It is said that chemical weedicides are now used to protect it from pests. The preparation process includes sowing, harvesting, boiling, drying, and polishing.
However, it remains true that turmeric is still a natural remedy for hundreds of illnesses.
Turmeric as an Effective Medicine
A chemical compound found in turmeric called curcumin (Curcumin) is highly beneficial for health. It is now being used in efforts to eliminate cancer cells in the intestines. Earlier laboratory experiments showed that curcumin can stop the growth of cancer cells.
Benefits have also been observed in patients suffering from stroke and dementia.
At Leicester Infirmary and General Hospital in the UK, 40 cancer patients are being given medicines prepared from curcumin alongside chemotherapy drugs. It is worth noting that around 40,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year. If cancer spreads to other parts of the body, patients are typically given a course of three chemotherapy drugs — though about half of these prove ineffective.
In the British hospital trial, patients are given curcumin tablets seven days before starting chemotherapy to study their effects. According to Professor William Steward, who is leading the research, experiments on animals have shown 100% positive results.
He stated that once bowel cancer takes hold, it becomes difficult to stop its spread. On the other hand, chemotherapy’s side effects often interrupt treatment. Research into curcumin offers hope that it may make chemotherapy more effective against cancer cells. This could allow doctors to reduce chemotherapy dosage, lower side effects, and continue treatment for longer periods.
Research conducted in other countries — including Chiang Mai University in Thailand — suggests that curcumin may also help protect patients who undergo bypass surgery from heart attacks. Turmeric improves blood circulation throughout the body and acts as a natural blood thinner. Scientists believe curcumin capsules may offer new hope for heart patients.
Buy Organic Turmeric
Organic turmeric has a natural yellowish color without artificial shine. It is better to buy whole turmeric roots and grind them at home.
If turmeric is colored with starch powder or coal-tar dyes, it may enhance the color of food but will lose its health benefits. Artificially colored turmeric can cause stomach heaviness, acidity, nervous disorders, kidney problems, and may be extremely harmful for pregnant women.
Always buy spices and cooking oil from trusted stores. Before paying, check the brand name, expiry date, and listed ingredients. Not everything sold in the open market is reliable — wise selection depends on our judgment.
Turmeric is an excellent natural antiseptic. In the subcontinent, it is used daily in curries. Even today, elder women often give children turmeric mixed in milk after minor injuries, as it is considered a natural remedy that helps wounds heal faster.
